QOTD: Will Texas Lawsuit Against GM Prevail?

We all seem to dislike having our data harvested by our cars and sold to insurance companies. Now, the state of Texas has sued.

QOTD: How Do We Fight the Speeding Surveillance State?

I am a firm believer that while excessive speeding is dangerous and bad, not all speeding is.

For example, driving 11 mph over the limit on the freeway in a well-maintained car when you're dead sober and paying complete attention isn't that dangerous. Driving 60 mph in a school zone is.

I also firmly believe that speeding enforcement is often more about revenue collection than safety.

QOTD: Do You Want Fake Exhausts?

Electric vehicles don't make exhaust noise. Some EVs will be performance cars. Performance cars with ICE powertrains often make very cool sounds.

For some, the lack of those sounds will be a problem

QOTD: When Will the Insanity Stop?

I could probably write some version of this QOTD just about everyday, and I probably have written some version of it at some point over the last half-decade.

But it's worth revisiting. When will new-car prices become less insane?

QOTD: What Truckless Brand Should Enter the Fray?

Despite not really being a truck guy or having a need for a truck at present, I get irrationality excited whenever a brand that hasn't never sold a truck before -- or at least, not here in North America -- hints that it might enter the market. Or, in some cases, when long-dormant truck nameplates get revived.

So the Kia Tasman concept has got me interested -- even though it might never be sold here.

QOTD: What Movie Has The Best Automotive Product Placement?

I saw Twisters last night. It's fine, as far as nostalgia-based sequels go, though flawed. It also has a lot of Stellantis muscle -- one main character tools around in a Ram TRX and there are Durangos -- I think with Hemis -- aplenty, as well.

QOTD: Does It Make Sense for Elon Musk to Endorse Donald Trump?

It's a brief topic on our podcast today, but I have to wonder why the head honcho at an automaker that solely makes EVs is endorsing the presidential candidate whose administration will most likely be less favorable towards the technology should he win.

QOTD: Is It Over for the Little Guy?

One of my favorite moments in The Sopranos involves mobsters trying to shake down a large, faceless corporation. When the mobsters are told by the manager of a local store that if he acquiesces, he'll be fired and replaced by someone else and the corporation will make sure the mob doesn't get any money.

Perplexed, one says to the other "it's over for the little guy."

That scene came to mind when reading/editing Matt's piece on Penske Automotive Group scooping up another prolific Ford dealership.

  • Jeff I might buy a new bicycle in the next year but a new vehicle no.
  • Lou_BC This article is meaningless without reporting the facts around each incident. 16 incidents versus an average of 10. Is it because Rivian is new to the game?
  • Lou_BC It would encourage indebtedness. Start a business if you want more write-offs.
  • Bullnuke This is bogus. I specifically remember being told by an American Honda area manager that all Honda vehicles are perfectly designed and built completely without flaws and are perfect in all respects when driven off the dealership lots. Any issues occurring after that, including the reverse gear teeth being milled off during operation of this perfect vehicle with 8k miles on the clock, are due to owner irresponsibility, misuse, and abuse. That'll be $3200 for this perfect Honda transmission, please.
