QOTD: Is 1,000 Horsepower Too Much?

The reveal of the newest Corvette ZR1 has me wondering -- is 1,000 horsepower too much?

The "moar power" part of me thinks nah, not at all.

But on the other hand, very little of the car's horsepower, or its more than 800 lb-ft of torque, is very useful on the street. Speed limits and safety mean that any moneyed enthused who buys this car will have to save its full capabilities for the track.

Which is as it should be -- we won't hesitate to flame the first idiot who bins one of these at a Cars and Coffee or on a busy city street. Save it for the track.

The question is, if all that power can't be used for the street and it's only useful for the track, why even bother? Why not just make a separate track-only car?

Maybe to make it a numbers contest against other super cars?

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

These are going to be driven sparingly on temperate evenings, parked on the street near a swanky eatery downtown, enduring countless 3.5mile joyrides until you've cycled through the 8 or so boring relatives you are hosting and gleefully maintained by the local corvette dealership 3 hours away.

My C63 AMG's 503 hp is too much for the street. Anything more than that is just posturing :) Also, as a reminder, Corvettes competing at Le Mans driven by professional racers on a closed circuit at one of the biggest motor races in the world are down about 450 hp to a ZR1. Most people who can afford one of these can't safely drive it on track either.

  • SCE to AUX I can't warm up to the new look. Still prefer my 22 SF.
  • SCE to AUX I guess the direct sales stores weren't polled. Unless dealers are going out of business, I don't feel one bit sorry for them. They should most fear the mfrs who are eager to get rid of them, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.
  • Buickman trade frequently!
  • Lou_BC I guess I should pry all of the logos off my vehicle. That is a form of advertising. Anyone wearing 'branded" clothing?
