Used Car of the Day: 1965 Volvo 122s

Today we go away from the Lincoln/ Mercury love for a beat-up but classic Volvo -- this 1965 Volvo 122s.

The seller is clear about this car being in rough shape, though it runs and drives well, apparently. It sounds like the drivetrain and tires are in good shape -- but a lot of other stuff needs work.

It appears it leaks when it rains and the body and floor pan needs a lot of work. It sounds like needs doors especially. Oh, and rust appears to be a major problem.

Click over here for all the pros and cons. This car is located in Spokane, Washington, and the asking price is just $1,500.

Could be a fun project car, if you're so inclined.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

I had at least four teachers in middle and high school who drove Amazons. (It's a very Old Seattle kind of a thing to do.) They were mostly in this sort of condition.

Those short arms would also be a problem when it came to adjusting the Radio...
  • Scott If we had a Transportation Secretary worthy of the name he would be talking of a death penalty for any executive pushing a clear driver distraction like this. (metaphoric death penalty of course)
  • Bkojote It's funny how dieselgate looms over Piech and Winterkorn's legacy and not the fact under both of their reigns VW went from crap tier automaker to ultra crap tier automaker. The Phaeton gets held up as a no-compromises automobile when in reality you're talking about plastic water pumps, timing chain guides, and crappier foam than found in a mitsubishi mirage that rotted out by the next presidential term.
  • SCE to AUX If they had built the iDx ten years ago, I'd be trading mine in around now.
  • SCE to AUX A friend has six VWs, and three of them are diesels - one of them is a brown 05 Jetta TDI wagon (manual) with ~400k miles, but the Touareg TDI is barely driven. The 84 Jetta TDI is newest to the fleet. He spends a fortune maintaining and insuring them.
  • Arthur Dailey Have alwasy wondered about these vehicles. That could be a nice 'winter beater' (for those who believe in driving those), however the price seems high, at least to me. I nearly 'pulled the trigger on a Trooper (the previous generation) but instead got an AWD Civic 'tallboy' wagon. Have often wondered if that was the right choice, as a few years later we had another child and the Honda proved too small. So we upsized to our a minivan. However the Trooper would probably have been large enough. As an aside, yesterday I saw a near mint 1st generation Chevy Tracker on the road. Zero safety features, but again perhaps a fun off road run around?
