QOTD: What Features Do You Want?

Today's podcast leads to an obvious question of the day: What new-car features do you want in your next ride?

Wireless charging was popular in the study that we discussed on the podcast. But there are lots of popular comfort and convenience features that people want.

For example, as a snow-belter, I don't think I'd buy a new car without heated seats. Maybe I'm a wimp -- or maybe I like my buns toasted.

What about you? What will you make sure your next car has?

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Blind spot monitoring is the one modern feature I would really like. Other necessities are aircon, Bluetooth and physical knobs. buttons for all controls, any screen should be for navigation or to duplicate my phone screen only. I would also really like the interior that Jeff described above - "luxurious plush velour seats and a split bench seat in the front with a fold down arm rest in the middle" this, please, loose pillow style in bordello red. A heads up display would also be nice to have

What do I want in a vehicle for myself? A high greenhouse with minimal blind spots. Actual dials, buttons, toggle switches, slides or knobs to control the HVAC, sound system, lights, wipers, etc. Comfortable fully adjustable seats (a velour, split bench would work just fine). Heated front seats and steering wheel. An engine block heater. Room for 3 in the back seat. Rear HVAC vents, arm rests and cupholders. Manual windows and door locks would be just fine. An actual ignition switch requiring a key. Some modern 'safety features' such as ABS, traction control, and blind spot monitoring. Bluetooth. Auto headlights. If bucket rather than split bench seats an actual 'hand brake' and shifter. Tires that have a 'high profile' and are not 'run flat'. Real carpeting. Is that too much to ask for? Well it seems to be, as I am not aware of any manufacturer who offers such a vehicle in North America. At least not at an affordable price.
  • Redapple2 Looks lowered as well.
  • Redapple2 "Gloss primer." Perfect. The Crystal White Pearl on the wifes Forester is gorgeous. And it was FREE. ( It s a $1300 option on a Denali from the Evil -gm- vampire (and inferior looking )) Imagine the Acura with that white or Mazda Red with unpainted wheels.
  • Ste65797138 I keep reading about how there is new technology coming soon such as solid state batteries that will double the range and/or reduce charging times to minutes. I don't want to get stuck with an EV that is almost worthless because of its "old" batteries.
  • Redapple2 80% + of golf carts in The Villages are GAS. Boom.
  • Dale Sure. We have one now. When the big Mazda ages out we will most likely replace it with an EV.
