While enthusiasts like many of you likely swap cars every couple of years, many people hold onto their rides for much longer than that. iSeeCars recently released its list of the vehicles that people keep the longest, and most of the names will likely come as no surprise.

The iSeeCars study showed that more owners keep these ten vehicles for 15 or more years than others:

  • Toyota Highlander Hybrid: 7% kept for 15 or more years
  • Toyota Camry Hybrid: 6.9%
  • Toyota Highlander: 6.6%
  • Toyota Tacoma: 6.4%
  • Toyota Prius: 6.3%
  • Honda CR-V: 6.3%
  • Ford Escape Hybrid: 6.3%
  • Toyota RAV4: 6.2%
  • Lexus IS 350: 5.8%
  • Nissan Versa: 5.7%

iSeeCars executive analyst Karl Brauer said, “The functional, high-value nature of these models aligns with long-term ownership. If you’re keeping a car for 15 or more years, you want reliability, practicality, and fuel efficiency, traits all of these cars offer.”

Even if owners don’t love the vehicle they drive, there are plenty of great reasons to hold onto a single car for the long run. “Most consumers can’t commit to a single vehicle for more than a decade, but those that do save a lot of money on their vehicle costs,” Brauer said. “Keeping a car for 15 years means no loan payments for most of that time, along with falling insurance and registration costs. Those reduced expenses can counter higher maintenance costs as a car ages, especially in durable models that hold up well over time.”

I've had my Highlander Hybrid for 5 1/2 years (although I'm the second owner) and it just keeps going with routine maintenance. I'm sure I could keep it another ten years if I wanted to.

July 2005 the Highlander Hybrid was introduced, first gen platform. There are a ton of these roaming Seattle and most in excellent condition.

  • Def65817841 After the initial demand by battery lovers has played out, the subsequent decline in Scout sales will see VW bring out gas and hybrid versions.
