Used Car of the Day: 1985 Toyota Supra

I swear it's a coincidence that I am bringing you this 1985 Toyota Supra after bringing you drive notes on a modern Toyota sports coupe.

Yes, true, the Supra today is a different beast than the GR86, so the news peg I am using is thin. But bear with me, because I really like this Supra from the middle of the "greed is good" generation.

Even though it has some flaws.

The seller says it has 95,000 miles and is in generally good shape with the original paint mostly in good condition, though I see some small rust spots in the pics and the front bumper has been repainted. There are scuffs, too, apparently.

The interior seems to be in good shape with the exception of some sun-related fade.

It sounds like the car runs and drives well, but may need gaskets soon, and the A/C works but doesn't hold charge. The radio is aftermarket.

If you're interested in this ride -- and I admit, I have a soft spot for these cars -- click here. It's located in Colorado and on sale for $8,900.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

If you buy a vehicle such as this you are not racing or tracking it. You are taking your grandchildren, childhood friends or grandchildren for a leisurely cruise. In good weather. So the automatic is not really that much of a drawback, if at all, in real life use.

Absolutely love this car. If in the market, I would definitely buy.
  • Kwik_Shift_Pro4X Never seen an advertised freebie. In one my ONE instance of receiving a freebie was after taking a Mercedes Metris for a test drive. A van we were strongly considering for wheelchair transport. Sadly no upfitters in Ontario modified the Metris so we went with a '19 Dodge Grand Caravan GT instead. Salesman gave me a red Metris shaped USB-A memory stick 16 GB. Still have it. lol
  • Add Lightness $20 gift certificate for taking a test drive.
  • Jeff71960 slap a nice set of wheels on it and it won't look bad 👍️
  • Buickman might as well give it up, not like he can go anywhere with it.
  • SCE to AUX Pretty good review (and I'm not a biker). I guess e-bikers don't have to worry about losing range from HVAC.
