GM Again Delays Electric Truck Production in Orion Township

General Motors is again shuffling its EV production goals. Late last year, the automaker announced a one-year delay in electric truck production at the Orion Township plant, pushing the date back to late 2025. Now, that date is being pushed back further, with GM CEO Mary Barra saying the company would wait another six months to start production.

That pushes electric truck manufacturing back to mid-2026 and could leave the Orion Township facility idle for almost two years. The location was previously responsible for building the Chevy Bolt but had been slated for a retooling to accommodate electric trucks. GM currently builds the GMC Hummer EV pickup and Chevy Silverado EV at its Factory Zero in Detroit-Hamtramck.

GM also plans to delay Buick’s first North American EV, which was initially planned for a release this year. The automaker has already started sales of Buick EVs in China, but Americans’ hot-or-cold attitudes toward electric vehicles has complicated its aggressive expansion plans here, leading it to believe that Factory Zero can handle current demand.

Barra said, “We’re confident we can meet customer demand for standout EV trucks in the interim by leveraging the production capability and flexibility we have in Factory Zero. We will also continue to take advantage of the flexibility we have to mix production between Ice and EVs at key plants.”

Ms. Barra is confident that GM can meet customer demand. No demand. No build. That was easy. LOL

Evs do suck, though. I mean, they really do.
  • 28-Cars-Later Suggestion for future QOTD: Given the fact US road infrastructure is crumbling around us why must all new cars have 20+ inch wheels with tires an inch or two thick in sidewall which literally become bent over time bc of potholes? I know initially in the 90s wheels got bigger to accommodate larger disc brakes but its gone a little too far given the road infrastructure don't ya think?

  • SCE to AUX I can't warm up to the new look. Still prefer my 22 SF.
  • SCE to AUX I guess the direct sales stores weren't polled. Unless dealers are going out of business, I don't feel one bit sorry for them. They should most fear the mfrs who are eager to get rid of them, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.
