Used Car of the Day: 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder

Today we have a person selling their 2005 Toyota MR2 Spyder because they live in the city of Chicago and congestion makes it too hard to have fun with the car.

As a fellow Chicagoan, my gosh do I feel that.

This one has a five-speed manual and 28K miles. It is stock mechanically though there are some minor cosmetic mods.

It appears to run and drive well and have been well-maintained. It also is "loaded" with options.

If you'd like to know more, click here. The asking price is $21,700

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Lota Lotus in the first gen and probably a lot still in the second gen. Lotus agility and Toyota toughness.Little wonder there's a big premium.

I believe this is the third gen senor dos, but otherwise quite correct.

Anyone who wanted to suffer through such impracticality would have just gone off and gotten an Elise and were thus deranged (your's truly is one of them). The Miata and Boxster had trunks and cubbies putting them in a different class in terms of livability.

Even an Elise fitted with it's hard top is wildly impractical. I went to Home Depot yesterday and could only get a 3ft stick of lumber lol.

  • NJRide Wonder how many pre-downsized domestics were traded for these. Probably 100's of thousands of X-Cars for the later 1980's Accords
  • Fred On a positive note now you can join the Orphan's Car Club
  • FreedMike Buyer to dealer when this hits the lot: "Whaddya mean, it's five grand more than a standard truck and only goes 20 miles on a charge?"
  • FreedMike Looks like my brother's old Accord after he was done thrashing it. Dad ended up donating the car, and it was so bad that the person who ended up getting it for free - a Russian Jewish emigre (a big number back in the '80s) - somehow got our number from the agency we donated it to and called us to complain about it.
