Used Car of the Day: 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R

Today's UCOTD is a $5,500 sporty Nissan that's over 30 years old, in "ok" shape, and according to the seller, able to surprise "American muscle".

It's a 1991 Nissan Sentra SE-R with a SR20DET engine from a U12 Bluebird.

This car also has a manual transmission and a chassis with 204K miles on it. The seller planned to restore it but ran into issues -- there's more at the link. The list of features is long and a nice mix of factory/stock and new/aftermarket. For example, most suspension bits are new and/or aftermarket.

Older Sentra SE-Rs are often looked upon as performance bargains -- and this one could be a nice grab if you're able to put the time and money into restoring it.

Check it out here.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

TTAC WRITER: Do you need a crash course to understand what are screaming bargains and what are UTTER RIPOFFS among used cars? It seems you have gone back to picking from the LATTER category. GET SERIOUS. WHat is the POINT of today's 'find"? WHO in his or her right mind would want this? Back in 1988, you could get a BRAND NEW Hyundai for less. That is only 3 years from 1991!!!

The SeR are not bad cars. Had the newer version. 6spd becomes irrelevant since not enuf power to push her at the higher speed. With the 2.5 engine these things are not slow.

  • 28-Cars-Later Suggestion for future QOTD: Given the fact US road infrastructure is crumbling around us why must all new cars have 20+ inch wheels with tires an inch or two thick in sidewall which literally become bent over time bc of potholes? I know initially in the 90s wheels got bigger to accommodate larger disc brakes but its gone a little too far given the road infrastructure don't ya think?

  • SCE to AUX I can't warm up to the new look. Still prefer my 22 SF.
  • SCE to AUX I guess the direct sales stores weren't polled. Unless dealers are going out of business, I don't feel one bit sorry for them. They should most fear the mfrs who are eager to get rid of them, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.
