Recent Tesla Recall for Hood Latch Issue Wraps in Over 1.8 Million Vehicles
Tesla recently recalled almost two million vehicles for a problem that could cause the hood to come unlatched. The automaker said it had received reports of hoods opening in China, leading it to open an investigation here.
The issue relates to the hood latch assembly, which may not detect an open condition. When that happens, the vehicle fails to notify the driver, which could lead to the hood flying open at speed. That would obviously present a significant problem to the driver and anyone around them on the road.
Tesla’s recall wraps in almost 1.85 million vehicles. Affected models include:
- 2017-2024 Model 3
- 2013-2024 Model S
- 2016-2024 Model X
- 2020-2024 Model Y
Though this seems like a hardware problem, Tesla issued a software update to remedy the problem in affected models. The update, firmware release 2024.20.3, ensures that the hood release can detect an open condition and warn the driver. The automaker said it is not aware of any crashes, deaths, or injuries stemming from the problem.
This action follows a Cybertruck recall last month when Tesla said it would fix issues with exterior trim panels and windshield wipers. The company also recalled almost every vehicle it had sold earlier this year for a problem with the warning light fonts being too small, and in May, it pulled back around 125,000 cars for failing seatbelt warnings.
