QOTD: Can the Sedan Be Saved?

Those of you with long memories will remember that one my first posts here, way back in Twenty Aught Seventeen, was a defense of sedans.

I may have been wrong -- Nissan is the latest OEM to reduce its amount of available sedan models. This is the same brand that once touted sedans to us assembled media during a press launch.

I, being a stubborn sort, still believe the sedan won't totally die. I think there's a market for luxury sedans, and I believe certain mainstream sedans will still sell to those who don't want or need a crossover. The Honda Accord and Camry will be around for a long time. I also think sports sedans will continue.

Who knows? Maybe today's children will reject their parent's automotive choices the way Gen Xers rejected station wagons and Millennials looked askance at minivans. Maybe sedans will come back.

Or maybe the latest Nissan news means we're now living in a crossover world for good.

What say you? Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

Of course sedans can be saved, just like they were around 16 years ago. All we need is an downturn like the one we had around 16 years ago.

Arguing against sedans reminds me a lot of the arguments against vinyl. Also, do hatches get lumped into the sedan category?
  • AZFelix "Oh no! Anyway... " Jeremy Clarkson
  • SCE to AUX I can't warm up to the new look. Still prefer my 22 SF.
  • SCE to AUX I guess the direct sales stores weren't polled. Unless dealers are going out of business, I don't feel one bit sorry for them. They should most fear the mfrs who are eager to get rid of them, reducing costs and increasing customer satisfaction.
  • Buickman trade frequently!
  • Lou_BC I guess I should pry all of the logos off my vehicle. That is a form of advertising. Anyone wearing 'branded" clothing?
