QOTD: NASCAR Goes City

I will be leaving in a few minutes to head to downtown Chicago to work on our coverage of NASCAR's Grant Park 220 race. So, with that in mind, I have a question for you.

This is, apparently, the first street course that NASCAR has run. IndyCar runs street courses a few times each year, and we know F1's most famous race is on the streets of Monaco. I am wondering if NASCAR should continue to do more street races, regardless of how well Chicago things in Chicago go.

That's it. That's the question. Even if the race here doesn't go well for whatever reason, should NASCAR try this elsewhere? I say yes, though I understand how much it can inconvenience people. I think it can grow the sport and it makes for more interesting racing than ovals. I am not anti-oval, I just think it should be mixed up (I also love road courses).

So, what say you?

Sound off below.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

If this brings out the vibrant celebrations that the youth of Chicago have often displayed for consumer brands while giving them the opportunity to experience cars racing in the streets as if inspired by the GTA video games, I'm all for it.

I believe the course should be run anticlockwise.

When I was a kid, Sly Stone was supposed to do a free concert there in the park. He didn't show. First full-on riot I ever experienced. So, the locals should be able to cope easily with anything stock(?) car related. Whether the Rangers show up or not.
