GM President Set A New Speed Record Behind the Wheel of a 2025 Corvette ZR1

Top-speed runs are usually reserved for the most expensive and exclusive vehicles around, but an American brand’s latest attempt shows that extreme speed isn’t reserved for the most elite among us. General Motors president Mark Reuss recently took a new Chevy Corvette ZR1 to a record top speed for cars under $1 million, placing it in the ranks of vehicles costing several times more.


Reuss hit 233 mph in the 2025 Corvette ZR1. He made the run on the High-Speed Oval Track at ATP Automotive Testing Papenburg in Germany and set the time with a two-way speed average.  Speaking about the drive, Reuss said, “Setting the top-speed record in the Corvette ZR1 is a true triumph for Corvette and Chevrolet, and also an exhilarating, surreal experience for me personally. With the current generation’s switch to mid-engine, we knew the outstanding performance and balance made this a real possibility. To go over there and get it done is a testament to the power of ZR1, and to the incredibly talented team that developed and built it.”

Chevy engineers developed a Top Speed Mode for the test, which adjusts vehicle systems to attempt the extreme speeds. Even with those improvements, the car pinged its redline in six gear hitting the speeds. GM said five other engineers were able to exceed 230 mph on subsequent runs, proving that the car isn’t a one-trick pony.

    This proves GM can do great vehicles, but only if the engineering teams are allowed to.

      But nobody has had anything but positive things to say about the C8. Clearly they can build class leading vehicles when they set out to do so. Why they won't through the rest of their lineup is a mystery.

  • Varezhka Tried and true 3.5L VQ V6 replaced with 2.0L KR I4 turbo with questionable durability. For that, it gets 20 less horsepower but 20 lb-ft more in torque, worse highway mileage, and same 23 mpg combined. Why are we doing this again? Meanwhile, Toyota Crown Signia gets 38 mpg combined with its 2.5L I4 hybrid and Mazda CX-70 does 25 mpg combined with 3.3L I6 turbo.
  • SCE to AUX Does this mean that 1500 production is maxed out at Sterling Heights, and so Saltillo would just be adding capacity? Even that won't fly. Saltillo production of the other trucks was justified somehow, and moving some 1500 production there is probably for the same reasons. Keeping their future e-truck mfg in the US would avoid tariff trickery, risked only if the battery isn't strictly US-made. These mfrs can't keep pinning their hopes on the Administration they have (or the one they wish they had).Maybe this will hasten Stellantis' brand decisions.
