Housekeeping: Happy Juneteenth

We're off Monday to celebrate Juneteenth.

The holiday commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans, so I'd like you to take some time Monday to reflect on how bad slavery, as an institution, was in this country. That's something that I'd like to think most of us would agree on, regardless of where we sit on the political spectrum (I know that there are some who downplay the horrors or even defend the idea, and that saddens me).

Speaking of politics, please keep any racism, hatred, bigotry, and the like out of the comments. While we're here -- I am aware that the comments have been a bit unruly lately. We're working through some things internally that will make it easier to discipline those who break our rules. Please, play nice -- it's a privilege, not a right, to be able to comment on a platform like this. Don't make us drop the banhammer.

As per usual, there might be a stray feature/weekend post or breaking news coverage. Otherwise, see you Tuesday.

Tim Healey grew up around the auto-parts business and has always had a love for cars — his parents joke his first word was “‘Vette”. Despite this, he wanted to pursue a career in sports writing but he ended up falling semi-accidentally into the automotive-journalism industry, first at Consumer Guide Automotive and later at Web2Carz.com. He also worked as an industry analyst at Mintel Group and freelanced for About.com, CarFax, Vehix.com, High Gear Media, Torque News, FutureCar.com, Cars.com, among others, and of course Vertical Scope sites such as AutoGuide.com, Off-Road.com, and HybridCars.com. He’s an urbanite and as such, doesn’t need a daily driver, but if he had one, it would be compact, sporty, and have a manual transmission.

FreedMike--I don't believe EB has any thoughts about history in regards to this article but based on his prior comments my belief is he is only on this site to troll. I am not going to accuse him of being a racist but his comments are definitely against Juneteenth and come close to racism which I hope is not the case. There are a lot of things that occurred in history that many of us weren't alive during those occurrences but that doesn't mean they are not important or that they didn't occur. I don't remember the mention of reparations in this article. Most would not infer that the celebration of Juneteenth means eventual reparations.

You are a complete fraud. You personally attack those you don’t agree with, are never able to participate in an adult discussion based on facts and reason yet accuse others of trolling.

Also, let’s debate what comments of mine come close to being racist. Once again you can’t provide any examples you’re just here to troll. You are a person of very low moral character and you are a complete hypocrite.

Plenty of legal discrimination in the U.S. today. More every day.

"Nobody alive today was ever impacted by slavery."

Do you have any family wealth that came down from more than about three generations ago? Then your pocketbook was impacted by slavery.

IIf anyone is erasing history it's been the conservatives via school textbooks and banning other books, just like the right in Japan which has "whitewashed" Japanese atrocities during WWII and paint Japan as the "victim" of US aggression.

Do we have statues of Benedict Arnold and streets/schools/military bases, etc named after him?

The Confederate officers, likewise, were TRAITORS, so any misguided monuments to them (btw, most of these monuments to Confederate "heroes" were erected in the 20th century as a means to further mentally subjugate black Americans) belong in a museum.

There are no such monuments dedicated to Arnold (even in museums) and yet, pretty much every American has heard of him at least once as his treachery is taught in school/history books.

There are also no monuments to Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini, etc either. and yet many Americans know of them.

The whole argument of "erasing history" by taking down Confederate statues was always laughable and asinine.

    Virtue signal received, carry on.

It was merely a post explaining why there were no posts today. You are the one who turned it into 'virtue' signaling.
